Latent Normative Dissonance

Why Athens blamed the youth

I've noticed that many of the Gen X (and older) creators I once admired now seem mostly angry with the way things are. It's much easier, after all, to criticize the present than to actually shape the future.

They offer countless criticisms, rarely propose solutions, or take action to build the better world they claim to want.

I wondered if this pattern had an official name, but it doesn't. So, here’s my own GPT-assisted1 definition based on my observations.

I don't mean this as a criticism of others so much as a reminder to myself.

Latent Normative Dissonance

Latent normative dissonance is a persistent cognitive-affective tension produced by the gap between a person’s partly implicit model of how the world ought to be and the world they perceive around them. This normative schema may become more elaborate and entrenched with age as experience accumulates, while remaining difficult to verbalize, examine, or translate into action. Because it silently organizes judgment, emotion, speech, and expectation, repeated failures to express or realize it create frustrated agency, chronic dissatisfaction, and resentment toward people, institutions, or reality itself.
